He is considered to be one of the most accomplished classical guitarists of his generation, and performs regularly at all the major concert halls on the international scene. His discography includes a CD of the music of Napoleon Coste on the Naxos label, the complete guitar music of Paganini for Arts, and several titles on the Stradivarius label, including a disc of music by Alexandre Tansman which came out in 2000. Zigante is an ideal performer for this music". Although born in Bisceglie, Mauro Giuliani's centre of study was in Barletta where he moved with his brother Nicola in the first years of his life. His first instrumental training was on the cello, an instrument which he never completely abandoned, and he probably also studied the violin. Subsequently he devoted himself to the guitar, becoming a very skilled performer on it in a very short time. And he went on to define a new role for the guitar in the context of European music The names of his teachers are unknown and we cannot be sure of his exact movements in Italy. Giuliani's "Le Rossiniane" is a series of six fantasias fo solo guitar based around themes from Rossini's operas. The music combines the composer's inherent skill in the form of theme and variations with music that makes wonderful use of the instruments virtuosic potential. The recording of Giuliani's "Le Rossiniane" presented here was a world premiere at the time. It originally appeared as two separate CDs in 1995 and was critically acclaimed on release. During that year it was chosen as "best recording of guitar music" at Expomusica in Pesaro, Italy.
