So ThereOpis:Product DescriptionWidely regarded as the world's most outstanding bass guitarist - he has won both the Down Beat Critics Poll and Readers Poll as #1 electric bassist every year since 1985 - Steve Swallow, born 1940 in New York, is a musician of vast accomplishment. He has played with many of jazz's major figures - from George Russell and Paul Bley to Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. Associated with Carla Bley since 1960, he has appeared on all of her WATT recordings since 1978. Swallow's 1980 ECM leader date 'Home' set poems by Robert Creeley who was so enamoured that he began collaborating with Swallow in live jazz + poetry projects. For this album, Swallow recorded Creeley reading his poems in upstate New York, wrote new music around the poet's speech rhythms, then flew to Oslo to complete the project with Steve Kuhn and the Cikada String Quartet (recommended by Manfred Eicher). Swallow's writing for strings is exceptional. Steve Kuhn, whose affinity to strings was shown on his recent 'Promises Kept' on ECM, delivers a magnificent performance, showing the great range of his pianistic technique, from intensely melodic invention to free swirling sound masses. The poems, often brimming over with good humour, have a very "jazz" feel to them, their sprung rhythms related to jazz of the bebop era, and often, too a dry wit coolly conveyed in the poet's deadpan delivery: "If it isn't fun, don't do it," Creeley intones. "You'll have to do enough that isn't." This album is definitely fun. Humorous, yet also profound. Musically adventurous, yet also attractive and approachable, it serves as a wonderful tribute to Robert Creeley who died suddenly in 2005.
