OutbreakOpis:Dennis Chambers is best known as the drummer who powered the bands of John Scofield and Gary Thomas in the 1980s and 1990s. Outbreak, in which he surrounds himself with a stellar cast including Scofield and Michael Brecker, shows he's lost none of his punch. Chambers doesn't compose much, but he's lucky to have on side Jim Beard, one of the most talented and underrated writers and arrangers on today's jazz scene. Beard wrote three of the nine numbers here, produced and arranged everything and plays keyboards throughout. Beard's musical signature, the subtle disappointment of harmonic expectation, is especially evident in his tune "Roll Call", where a standard funk lick is gruesomely subverted by a dissonant counterpoint from Bob Malach's slurping bass sax. But Beard's hand is evident throughout the record in the richly detailed arrangements and crisp, three-dimensional production. Arrangements such as these demand extraordinary players, and Chambers has assembled a top-drawer crew including Scofield, Brecker, Malach, Will Lee, Jon Herington, Matthew Garrison and Gary Willis. Scofield's own "Otay", first heard on his Loud Jazz album, acquires a new life in a quartet with Chambers, Willis and Beard, and Brecker builds layer upon layer of intensity in his Olympian solo on "Outbreak". No matter how hot the jazz gets, funk, the essence of Chambers' playing since his days with Parliament and Funkadelic, underpins everything, not least the final cut, a slamming instrumental version of James Brown's "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothin'".
