Cantos AztecasOpis:This extraordinary project originates from composer Lalo Schifrin's guest conducting visits to Mexico which inspired the writing of large-scale pieces based upon some early poetry. The recording was taken at the premiere of the work before a 12,000-strong crowd sat at the base of the Aztec Temple of the Moon. Listening to this album in all its enormity, one can only assume the event was truly stupendous. Each of the six pieces are massively orchestrated making it often a dizzying aural experience to attempt to follow any one part at any one time. In "Chalchihuitl--War Song", the fanfares never seem to end, while elsewhere it's the sustained notes from the featured artists that seem to linger eternally. It all builds organically toward the 10-minute extravaganza of "Ma Oc On Ichiuhtihua--Let Us Leave Some Songs". There's no intention to replicate whatever the music of the Aztecs may have sounded like.
